For those of you who like Oriental rugs but, after pricing them at a rug store, do not think you can afford to have one, consider your local auction house. In some areas of the country, Oriental rugs sell at auction for much less than their actual value. This is especially true in many areas of the Southeast.

If you were to shop at a rug store, the dealer waiting on you would answer all of your questions and explain the different types of Oriental rugs and how to evaluate them. Although you will pay much less for a rug at an auction, no one there is going to help educate you on the ins and outs of Oriental rugs. Since auctions sell all sorts of merchandise, to include all types of rugs and carpets, you will have to rely on your own knowledge just to figure out if a rug that has caught your eye is in fact an authentic Oriental or just a copy of one.

Evaluating the quality of something you might spend a few hundred dollars on can be stressful. It is however worth it when you consider that the same rug could cost you a couple of thousand dollars at a store.

It is possible that one of the reasons why Oriental rugs bring so much less money at an auction house is because of their complexity. Every time one is sold, there are probably a number of people in the audience who are thinking about how low the price seems. Even though most of them would probably like to buy one, they sit there and never bid. This phenomenon is usually fear related.

There are questions that need answering about any rug before you bid on it. Either the auctioneer or the auction house owner will answer questions for you if they can. However, they themselves might not know all that much more than you do so, chances are, you are on your own. We do not suggest you solicit other customers at preview for information. There is nothing wrong with doing so except you could be asking someone who is interested in bidding on the same rug. If that is the case, this person could intentionally mislead you.

Do your homework. Familiarize yourself with local rug dealers. Shop their stores and look at their prices. Attend a couple of auctions that have Oriental rugs for sale and see what they sell for. More importantly, who is buying them? Are the dealers that you have met the ones who are bidding on them and purchasing them? If so, they are most likely decent rugs. Most dealers will not buy sub-standard or defective rugs at auction, since they are the ones who send those kinds of rugs to auction in the first place.

Since most dealers have access to an unlimited number of rugs through their connections, once you know what you are doing, do not be afraid to bid against them. They will only pay so much at auction for a rug. Remember they are buying wholesale so they can mark it up to include their profit margin. If you bid more than they do, you will get it for a lot less than their retail.

Take your time. Learn what you can about them from books and the Internet so you will know when you find the perfect rug.
